MyMistakes.2006

I always give wishes to everyone for a healthy and happy new year but the best thing I am doing when a year goes by is to write down my mistakes and try to fix them starting from 01.01.NextYear.

As no exception, this year I made a lot of mistakes. Some of them I would like to share with everyone:

  1. I delayed to take action when the problem was obvious. This happened many times during this year in many different situations. Moreover, this mistake is carried on from previous years. I hope I will fix this in 2007 because it’s one of the worst mistakes an entrepreneur can make. When you see a problem think and take action immediately.
  2. I spent many hours on micro-management. This mistake is almost fixed by now. Of course, depending on what you consider micro-management to be, you always have to do little of it.
  3. I dedicated much of my thoughts to ideas that I already knew I wouldn’t make a reality. Be careful about this one: The mind always goes wild but you have to do some execution as well. Think and invent new ideas but also make your project a reality. I have now ended up with a list of hundreds of ideas but decided only to dedicate myself to one. I believe this is a right choice for the new year:)
  4. I didn’t do any sports, outdoor activities, etc. I did swim more than a hundred times in the sea during the year but still I didn’t do much to improve my physical health. Anyway, this is quite fixed again (I am not talking about the Wii tennis I was playing yesterday) by building a personal gym in the office and arranging some football and basketball matches with friends.
  5. I forgot to keep in touch with many friends. This is the part where sometimes business takes over your personal life and really no one wants this to happen.

As a last remark I would say that it’s impossible not to make any mistakes at all in your life but you have to be careful not to make the same mistakes again. Life itself is a great teacher for everyone but you need to be able to sit down and learn from your mistakes.

Cell phone + GPS = Real world web 2.0

This of this: Web 2.0 is a logical evolution for the internet that fulfills the need to create and become part of connected communities. In real world, the difference is that we can’t meet directly someone who is on the other side of the world. Moreover, we don’t have the ability to know what the people we meet in the street are interested in. They are not tagged just like they are in any web 2.0 website. So not only we don’t have the power to bring people together from distant places but we even don’t have a way to connect people that walk together in the same street or take the same bus to work every morning.

On the other hand, sooner or later cell phones will have powerful operating systems, integrated GPS devices and of course they will always be connected to the internet. In a few words this means that we could have applications which will inform the user about a great amount of information of other people that live close to him or just pass by. For example, I could easily locate people around me that have joined the Prius club community I run in Greece, or even people going for fishing the same time I go in the summer. Think of how dating websites could evolve through this. Or shopping for example… You could locate all the people that want to buy the same TV in your area and receive a discount. Basically, any social-based website could become a real world community that is localized to every single place.

I believe we are very close to this and most important, it’s a technology that is already accepted from almost the entire population.

Waiting in the line: A highly productive experience

Well, this is a problem that most people would hate it. Instead I like waiting in the line or even at a doctors’ office. The reason is very simple: This is time you can use to think.

In most cases when you decide to turn off the laptop and the phones and get down to think you are usually disturbed by your own thoughts that you would like to work on immediately. This doesn’t happen when you have to wait for something else.

Last time I was to my dentist I had to wait for about 45 minutes. Since I wasn’t afraid by the fact that I was visiting my dentist, these minutes had been very productive. Instead of waiting minute by minute and wondering when will my turn come, I had the time to think on marketing and development. I had nothing to disturb me and nowhere to go. I was just sitting in a quiet room just waiting my turn. I must admit though that I spent the first 10 minutes persuading the rest of the patients to turn off the TV. However, the rest of the time proved to be very productive. I figured some workarounds that saved me at least 6 hours of work.

So next time you have to wait think again before getting disappointed; It’s a chance for thinking and solving your problems without distractions.

Leweb3 – Can Europe compete US in web 2.0?

I will be attending the leweb3 event in Paris on 11th December. The major reason I am attending this is to get in contact with other people involved in the web 2.0 industry. Moreover, I would like to hear thoughts on how can Europe compete with web 2.0 companies in US. Many people consider web 2.0 only as part of Silicon Valley. On the other hand I believe that web 2.0 is a necessary evolution of the internet. People demand web 2.0 websites. So in fact every company should adapt to these new facts.

If you are visiting leweb3 as well I will be happy to meet you. Be sure to add yourself to the wiki so we can meet with others before the conference as well: http://www.eu.socialtext.net/leweb3/index.cgi?get_togethers_before_and_during_the_conference

Becoming an entrepreneur through education

During the conference at Yes for Europe (European confederation for young entrepreneurs, http://www.yes.be/) one of the speakers mentioned that education should change in order to teach students how to become entrepreneurs. I partly agree with this statement. I believe that education should help students find out first if they want to be entrepreneurs and only if they do, should it offer them the tools and advice to become successful ones.

The common mistake that most entrepreneurs make is to think that everybody wants to be like them. Being an entrepreneur is a way of life. A way that you have to choose and believe in by all means. Especially in start-ups, which are a position that almost all entrepreneurs are in at least once in their life, you have to make many sacrifices in your life, work hard, and be always motivated and much focused on fulfilling your idea. You need to be able to accept failure and find out how you can benefit from it. I have failed so many times I can’t remember but each failure was just another experience which changed the way I am thinking. Moreover, an entrepreneur has to be able to adjust the way he thinks all the time. Nothing is to be taken for granted when you deal with business. What I have learned so far from talking to other entrepreneurs is that successful entrepreneurs think in a way that no other people can consider as logical thinking. However, not all people have all this motivation and courage to live this way. There is nothing wrong with that though. Not being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean you won’t have success in your life. However, you can’t be pushed, not even educated to become one.

So here comes the education. Education should help all students that want to become entrepreneurs and supply them with all the tools and advice they will need. The most important tool for an entrepreneur is the “networking”. Education should allow successful entrepreneurs to become mentors for young ones. This shall not be restricted to conferences and meetings. It should be combined with real life situations, in the meaning of working together. When I started my first company, no one could advice me on how to develop it. I had to find the information myself along with my partner. I am sure we have lost both time and money because of this. There is nothing better for an entrepreneur than to be able to do some networking and meet others to exchange experiences and ideas. Even a 5 minute discussion can save an entrepreneur from making wrong decisions. This networking is even more important than raising money for your company. That is why it should start at young ages.

As a conclusion I believe that education should first make the students understand if they really want to become entrepreneurs. Then it should play a role of getting young entrepreneurs and successful ones together. The older and successful ones should help those young entrepreneurs who are full of energy. And they will be both rewarded for sure.

From having no soul to immortality…

Most of the times I tend to see things from a very realistic view. I can accept and believe only the things I actually see happening. If I see something that seems unbelievable, I try to explain it. Of course, the major secrets in universe and life have not been explained yet. So this is when I enjoy making assumptions for several things. I don’t want to be misunderstood; those assumptions are likely to be wrong, but most of the times you can have a little fun and see things from different views when you make them.

So, my question for today is: What if humans had no soul? What if you exist only when you are living and being able to think and feel?

When I first thought of that question I immediately continued to think: No, this can be true. There is no way we exist only when we are alive. No one can believe this. All religions in the world believe that people have a future after death.

With those assumptions let’s do an experiment: Let’s consider that we can “save” the current information that exists on a human brain somehow. If that is only what makes him alive then if you actually had all the information you could save a human as information. And if you can recover this information to one or several other people then you would have humans thinking that they are alive and being the same persons (at the very moment of waking them up).  They would have the same experiences, feelings, etc. Of course from the time they get alive, all things will start to get different for them.

And now consider the following thought: What makes you think that every morning  you are still alive and not died while you were asleep? If you actually died while you were sleeping and then someone could wake you up with the thoughts and feelings that you actually had to think and feel in the morning if you hadn’t die how would you know? What actually matters is that when you wake up you remember what you did last night, last week, your whole life. You are actually the same person only because you remember and you can recall what you did before.

Another experiment then comes into place:  What makes you think that your thoughts and feelings are actually yours. They part of the universe after all aren’t they? If you think something, it is happening as  a set of actions / events (biological ones) which are part of the universe and secondly part of your brain. So when you are thinking, something happens to the whole universe not just your brain. You actually think that you are a separate existence only because you have a limited view of what the universe is. So if your thoughts are part of the universe, along with the thoughts from other people then the whole universe thinks something, which is a collection of all thoughts. It is alive and thinking.

So what happens if you die? Well, from the limited point of view that your existence had, you stop filling anything. You won’t exist again in the same way, only because there in nobody that can have the exact same experiences with you. If you think this from the wider view of the universe, only one small thought stopped to function. It will be just another experience for it, because it will continue to think of other things. It would be exactly like waking up in the morning and not remembering what you had for dinner yesterday. So in fact you are not dying.

The question that immediately raises is simple: If humans won’t exist anymore does it mean that the universe will be dead? Of course not! We assumed that humans are only thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings are actions performed by the brain. They are a physical process just like the movement of the planets, or the movement of the quarks is. One thought can result to a feeling just like one meteor can results to a change of a planets’ surface.

So in fact, if you assume that no soul exists, people are immortal. Someone (the universe) is thinking  (performing a set of actions like the biological actions of the brain which result to thoughts and feelings) whatever you think and will continue to think after you die. Your own thoughts will be a memory, just like your thoughts are after you wake up each morning.

Microsoft launches Photosynth

For me, Photosynth is one of the best ideas ever. In a few words it lets you see the world in photos. Photos that were taken by different people at different times with different cameras. The software collects all the information, merges the photos and creates a virtual but real looking world.

For the time being there are only a few collections of photos but if the projects goes well, I can imaging to whole world digitized!!

My bets are that the next version of secondlife will be based on something like that…
